DynaSlax, DynaSlaxGNS3 and DynaSlaxUSB LiveCDs

Written by LBSources from http://www.gns3-labs.com on June 23rd, 2008 | 4 Comments

Well .. It seems that someone has put some hard work into creating 3 awesome livecds. He’s (deadwait) built and tested Dynamips/Dynagen and GNS3 in the livecd and USB key formats. They are called DynaSlax, DynaSlaxGNS3 and I call the last DynaSlaxUSB :)

No official docs for the USB or GNS3 version yet. I guess he’s working on it. This is great as it should help those with low resource avail systems, but may operate a little slow due to disk access.

The creator says he’s created flawless labs with 14 routers. We will host these files here for the author since he doesn’t have any reliable (or speed) links available.

To record the iso on to a cd this could be helpful or use your favourite cd burning program: ISO Recorder v 2

boot your system with the slax cd, once the desktop shows up

open a terminal window and type in “python dynalive.py” without the quotations

this just sets the right permissions and creates symlinks in /usr/bin.once you have done that just start dynamips as you normally would.

i.e open a terminal windows and type in dynamips -H 7200

read the following below

*** Important ****

your .net files and images can be anywhere on a permanent drive like your windows harddisk or a usb but your have to change your working directory to somewhere on the slax partition

i have set a directory in the dynalive folder on the desktop, so if you would like just type in the foll. path as your working directory

workingdir = /root/Desktop/dynalive/wkgdir

the above line should be typed in .net file

remember to change your image path ,

to get your correct image path open up system –> storage media

here you can see you hardrives so your first harddrive which might be your c: will have a path of /mnt/sda1 where sda1 stands for your c:/

so if your image is in c:/images on windows then your image path will be

/mnt/sda1/images

in fact in the konqueror ( file manager ) address bar you can see the entire path, just replace /media with /mnt

you can right click on your hard-drive to see the correct sda info.

then after you finish your lab practise, you can copy the contents on to your harddrive.

i used slax because it was small plus had a easy to understand KDE desktop and very clear instructions on how to make your own cd, so you too can make one.

additions made on this normal Slax cd

dynagen

dynamips

python2.5.2 lzm module

wireshark module –> wireshark-1.0.0-i486-1tb

telnet module –> telnet-1.5

cli-ftp module –> cli-ftp-pack

nano module –> nano-2.0.6

slax-get module –> slax-get-0.7.2

john the ripper module –> john-1.7.0.2

nmap module –> nmap-4.60

To make your own live-cd check out http://www.slax.org.

Reason for making this CD

One of my colleagues screwed up his harddisk trying to partition and install ubuntu so that he could run dynamips and dynagen on it for the added performance benefit that linux gives.

to recover the data i ended up using slax ( im usually a archlinux user)

then it struck me that getting a live cd to run dynagen would be pretty safe and easy for normal users.
